From these efforts emerged the concept of phytoequivalence. Two products are phytoequivalent when they share a comparable phytochemical spectrum, achieve similar circulating levels of marker compounds following oral administration, and produce the same clinically relevant physiological endpoint.

Echinacea and the Consequences of Reductionist Standardization

Echinacea provides a clear example of how marker-driven standardization can fail. Clinical trials evaluating Echinacea have produced inconsistent results, largely because chemically distinct preparations were treated as equivalent.
